Position Title: Finance and Impact Investing Intern
Department: Finance and Investments
Reports to: Casey van der Stricht, Director of Impact Investing
Location: Intern works 40 hours a week with three days in the Indianapolis office.
Duration: Monday, May 12 to Friday, Aug. 8, 2025
Compensation:  $22 to $24 / hour for a graduate student or a recent graduate.
Free on-site parking is included.
Schedule:  Work hours are typically 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., scheduled in consultation with the supervisor.

Purpose

The candidate will collaborate with the Impact Investing team to progress Lumina’s goal of the attainment of quality credentials that lead to economic mobility. The Impact Investing team invests in innovative, technology-oriented solutions that address the unmet needs of students to and through higher education and workforce.

The candidate’s projects might include:

  • Comps analysis: based on market research, gather and streamline list of companies and fund managers in the education-tech (edtech) space, including but not limited to specifying verticals (e.g. K-12 or higher education? Service type – financial aid, mental health counseling, other? Stage – Seed, Series A, other?)
  • Field and sourcing engagement strategy: brainstorm, review, and assess new opportunities for investment sourcing to identify evidence-based products, services, and pipelines that align with Lumina objectives
  • Sourcing management: review and manage existing sources of new deals, and propose best practices for receiving new inquiries
  • Process development: document current and future state processes related to impact investing, which may include collaboration with internal accounting, grants management, and legal teams

Responsibilities

  • Co-constructing, leading, and managing short projects that leverage market-level financial data to inform internal strategies and strategy execution.
  • Leveraging market research to find and elevate strong opportunities for investment or ecosystem building.
  • Engaging with colleagues across the foundation through internal meetings and contributing to strategic conversations.
  • Working alongside strategy officers and directors to manage project tasks.
  • Other projects or tasks that the candidate and supervisor agree are related to the portfolio.

Education and Experience

  • Enrolled graduate student or recent graduate; we will also consider an equivalent combination of work and learning experience.
  • Understanding of impact investing, venture capital, private equity, or venture philanthropy is a plus.
  • Interest in the economics of postsecondary education and the issues underserved students from multiple perspectives is a plus.

  • Stable access to high-speed internet
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work in the Indianapolis area

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work is performed in an office environment, mostly sedentary.
  • Able to use technology necessary to monitor news media, track outreach, manage social campaigns, and produce high-quality video content.
  • Travel occurs infrequently but could include overnight stays to support external meetings and events.
